Another workshop with Jim Scherbarth

Last weekend I drove up to Minneapolis for the pleasure of studying with one of my favorite artists, James Edward Scherbarth. I had taken a workshop with Jim last April at Shake Rag Alley in Mineral Point, WI. I really respond to Jim's style of teaching and got so much out of the first class, that I signed up for another course as soon as I had a chance.

Jim's studio is located in the Northrup King building - an enormous L-shaped warehouse building in Northeast Minneapolis, that has been taken over by the local artists community. The place is filled with artist's studios - what a dream to walk through that place!

All six of the students were comfortably placed at tables in Jim's studio which was lined with all of Jim's amazing work, currently for sale in his gallery. What an inspiration that was! We had three wonderful days of learning, inspiration, and creativity. Jim taught us some great techniques, and inspired us with thought provoking exercises and lectures on art and creativity.

Thanks Jim! Can't wait to take another one of your workshops!

My work to be on Chicago PD

I just signed release forms today because the set designer for NBC's "Chicago PD" is going to use some of my work in the set for the show. Don't know which pieces yet but I will be watching carefully to see when and where they show up! What a thrill!

Art Retreat 2014

Just got back from a 4 day artist's retreat in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. 8 oil/cold wax painters, sharing a beautiful space at Shake Rag Alley, working side by side - what a great trip. Coincidentally there was a plein air competition happening the same weekend  in Mineral Point so we were surrounded by art and artists all weekend. It was fabulous! Below are some abstract oil/cold wax paintings I was working on during those four days, in various stages of done-ness.

Entered into IWS competition

I just entered the above painting, "Faded Chalkboard Memories" into the Illinois Watercolor Society's annual member show. It's a juried show so fingers crossed my painting will get noticed. I had a good spy of the competition when I dropped off and there are some serious contenders in that room!

schoolThe painting is a continuation of my "Discarded" series which features images inspired by vintage photography picked up in antique stores and junk shops. I like the idea of taking a discarded memory and giving it new life.

This particular painting was inspired by an image I found of a group kids lined up for their annual class photo (at left). It got me thinking about the commonality of that memory for most American kids, and how much memory fades as time goes by. I changed schools in first grade and as a result I can't remember more than one or two kids from my kindergarten class.

Faded Chalkboard Memories measures 22" x 30" x 2" and is watercolor and watercolor pencil on aquaboard. For pricing, inquire within.

All-In

One of my pieces was stolen

Ok - I was showing my work - 7 pieces - at a place that for privacy reasons I will not name. The show was over and I had planned to pick up the work on a agreed-upon day. The day before that however, I find out that one of my paintings had been stolen from the show.  !!!

The work that was stolen is pictured above. It's called All In, and it's part of my Discarded series. All the works in that series are based on old photographs that I've found in junk shops and antique stores.

Of course I was upset and freaked out - but also a little excited. Have I reached a new level in my art career? Work so good it's worth stealing? Well - I don't know about all that, but I couldn't help but feel a little complimented by the act of larceny. Is that weird?

The story ends well, I am happy to report. I got the painting back through the heroic acts of one lovely man who deduced who had stolen the painting and demanded it back on threat of pressing police charges.

My friend, I am forever in your debt. 😀

And for anyone interested in buying a piece with a past - please give me a call!

First day of workshop

Currently studying watercolor techniques with Karlyn Holman - today was abstract day. We worked with collage and watercolor for half the day and the other half of  the day we learned to work with alcohol inks. Having a ton of fun!
