Artists Write to Work

I am very excited to share that my friend, Kate Kramer, a lecturer in critical writing at the University of Pennsylvania, just published an excellent new book. (And my work is in it - woot! Thank you Kate!)

This book, "Artists Write to Work: A Practical Guide to Writing about Your Art" encompasses so much that I wish I had learned when I was an art student. Art school taught me process, technique, history, theory, critique - all great stuff - but something big was missing. I learned how to express myself in my work - but I did not learn anything about the business of art. Great art speaks for itself, right? Well, most times not nearly loud enough.

Marketing your work, and marketing yourself as an artist, is a discipline unto itself. It very often centers around the written word - artist statements, resumes, press releases, grants, calls for entry, even titling your work - effective writing is at the base of all of it.

This book, full of enthusiasm and wit, walks you through how to be an effective writer and advocate for your work - how to toot your own horn with pride and confidence. The book itself is adorable - compact in dimension, smartly designed with a bright orange ribbon to hold your page. Inside the lessons teach you how to write content for marketing your work, complete with templates, photographic examples and workbook exercises. The photos feature the works and writings of multiple artists (including me) illustrating up close how this is done.

To all of my artist friends, this is a must read. No matter how good you think you are, this will make you better. To all my art instructor friends, I highly recommend that you consider making this as a required read for your students. Please go check out the book yourself, it's for sale on Amazon: Artists Write to Work: A Practical Guide to Writing about Your Art.

Very well done, Kate! And thank you so very much - I am forever honored to be included in this staggering work of heartbreaking genius! I only wish I'd have had this 20 years ago!

Milwaukee Bucks permanent art collection at the Fiserv Forum

Wow - what a day!

On Friday, August 24, 2018, the Milwaukee Bucks permanent art collection at the Fiserv Forum was unveiled. I was lucky enough to be one of the 32 artists chosen from nearly 1300 applicants to have my work included in the collection. The day started with a televised press conference where I had the chance to meet many of the other artists, after which our friends and families were invited to come and tour the arena.  Over the weekend, the public is invited to tour the space and they're expecting up to 40,000 people.

The Fiserv Forum, an elegant new feature in the Milwaukee skyline, seats more than 17,000. My work is hanging on the suite level, outside of Suite 04. There is also a book commemorating the art and the artists, which I've shared in the video below.

The work I created, called "The Girls  Team," measures 26" x 36" before framing, and the medium is watercolor on Ampersand Aquabord. This piece is part of the Discarded series of works that I've been developing over the last few years which takes inspiration from antique photography to tell a story. For "The Girls Team", I found inspiration in images of women's basketball teams from the last century. The background of the piece is a grouping of girl players from earlier eras, dressed in their uniforms, lined up for team photos. They overlook the subject, a young woman of today playing ball against boys, and giving them a real run for their money. I wanted to illustrate that the women who played before, paved the way for today's young women to not just play without the judgment, but to achieve levels in the field totally out of reach by earlier generations.

This is truly the honor of a lifetime. I am so thankful to be included - thank you to the Milwaukee Bucks and especially to the wonderful women at Sports and the Arts who put this whole thing together!

The video below is of me narrating as I page through the Milwaukee Bucks Art Collection's commemorative book.

Below are some images of the day, including a closer look at "The Girls Team".

Made the cut!

Well this is some exciting news! Several months ago I answered a "call for artists" from the Milwaukee Bucks. They are building an amazing new arena and they want to include an art collection for this new building. Out of 1200 entries, and a couple levels of culling, I made the final cut of 32 artists chosen to create a painting for this new collection. Yahoo!

The actual piece that has been commissioned from me is under lock and key as part of my contract until the official unveiling at the end of summer, so don't expect to see any in-progress images or hints at what I'm creating. Just know that I am hard at work to make sure this is my best work ever!

Super exciting! 😀

Name change, life change

I am thrilled to announce to any who will listen that on December 2 2017, on an unseasonably warm day for December in Milwaukee, I married a man called Carr. John Francis Carr III to be exact – a man I've known since my college days — and he’s pretty fantastic!

While I gave the name Rochelle Marie Weiner a very good run, it’s time to ramble on from my given name to my chosen one. My new name is Rochelle Weiner Carr. Please update your address books!

Portraits make great gifts!

I love working on portraits. I especially love when someone commissions a portrait as a gift - holidays, anniversaries, weddings, even memorials of those who we've lost. I love working on portraits because of the love that flows from the giver, through me, to the person who ultimately receives the gift. I feel that love when I'm working on the project, and  I like to think that love shows in my work.

Just finishing up on two new projects - see below.

My new favorite person is from Nova Scotia

Just found out a collector in Nova Scotia picked up three of my paintings at the Leigh Gallery this month. Yahoo! The three pieces are from my Strata+Sphere series about my life growing up in Milwaukee. They are the same size, 12" x 12" x 2", and are all watercolor on board, employing transparent techniques.

I'm super excited to hear about this sale! Thanks Leigh Gallery, and thank you new collector, whoever you are!
